About the HOPE Center

The Center for the History of Political Economy is dedicated to advancing both research and teaching in the history of economics. Through a robust Visiting Scholars program, workshops, the HOPE Lunch series for discussing works in progress, special events, and its annual Summer Institute, the Center fosters a dynamic intellectual community. It also co-organizes the annual History of Political Economy conference in partnership with Duke University Press. Established in 2008 with a generous grant from the John W. Pope Foundation, the Center has played a vital role in cultivating the next generation of scholars.  The info- graphic below highlights the positive impact that the HOPE Center has had in supporting the achievement and growth of young scholars in the field.

In 2019, two new faculty members, Steven G. Medema and Jennifer Jhun, joined the HOPE Center's ranks as faculty fellows. The HOPE Center and the history of economics at Duke is in the midst of an exciting period of renewal and strength, building on a rich history and a growing set of scholarly resources.
