The mission of the Center for the History of Political Economy is to promote and support research in, and the teaching of, the history of economics. It supports an active Visiting Scholars program, a regular Workshop series, a Hope Lunch series for the discussion of work in progress, special events, a Summer Institute, and, with Duke University Press, the annual History of Political Economy conference.

Visiting Scholars

This program brings together 10–12 PhD students, post-docs, and professors who spend a semester or academic year at the Center. During their tenure, Visiting Scholars pursue independent research, engage with the vibrant intellectual community of the HOPE Center, and benefit from unparalleled access to the Economists’ Papers Archive.

Workshops

The Center hosts two weekly workshops during the academic year. These workshops offer an exceptional opportunity for the Center’s faculty, visiting scholars, and invited speakers to discuss their current research in a collaborative scholarly environment.

Summer Institute

Our annual Summer Institute alternates between two formats: a nine-day intensive program teaching the history of economics and designed to equip participants with the tools necessary to teach an undergraduate course; and a shorter, research-oriented institute in which participants present and receive feedback on one of their current working papers.

Economists' Papers

A cooperative effort between Center Faculty and the David M. Rubenstein
Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Economists' Papers Archive is a world-class collection of the academic papers of 100 prominent economists, past and present — including 14 Nobel Laureates. The collection is an invaluable resource for research in the history of modern economics.

Hayek Lectures

The Hayek Lecture Series, named for Nobel Laureate Friedrich A. Hayek, brings to campus scholars from a wide range of disciplines to deliver lectures that engage with ideas of historical interest and contemporary relevance. The series is sponsored by the HOPE Center and by the Philosophy, Politics and Economics Program.
