How to Apply

Eligibility

The primary purpose of the institute is to provide early-career scholars with in-depth feedback on their current research papers in the history of economics. Recent PhD recipients, post-docs, and students enrolled in PhD programs in economics, the history of science, sociology, and neighboring fields who have a research paper in the history of economics, broadly defined, are encouraged to apply. Applications by Master’s students will also be considered.

Application procedure

Applicants should submit a cover letter and a CV. The two should be sent electronically as a single PDF document to chope@econ.duke.edu with the subject line "SI Application."

The cover letter should state your reasons for applying and provide a summary of your research paper (2 pages single-spaced maximum). Please indicate the stage your paper is at (e.g., early draft, third or fourth draft, almost ready for journal submission) and what kind of feedback you have already received (e.g., none at all, comments from your advisor, comments from conference participants). You should also indicate the gender with which you identify to assist us in allocating rooms. If you are indifferent as to the gender of your roommate, let us know; this will make it easier for us to assign rooms in the event that we have an odd number of accepted applicants with respect to gender.

The CV should not exceed four pages.

Award, tenure, and conditions of award

Participants will present their research paper before the group and attend and participate fully in all sessions. Each participant commits to reading all papers in advance of the sessions in which they are discussed, a practice that is essential for an effective workshop environment. There will be 12 to 14 papers presented in all. Participants must submit their paper no less than two weeks prior to the beginning of the institute—that is, by May 25, 2020.

Those who are not locally based will be provided with double-occupancy housing at the Washington Duke Hotel. If there is someone who has been accepted with whom you would like to share a room, let us know. We will also cover the cost associated with economy-class round-trip airfare (including from overseas) and provide a meals stipend.
