Please join us for the newest installment of the Hayek Lecture Series on Thursday, October 17, at 4:45 pm in 139 Social Sciences Building. In a lecture titled "Europe's Secularization and Economic Ascent Centuries before Luther," Professor Bueno de Mesquita of New York University will question the impact of the Protestant Reformation, arguing that it was not a major driver either of northern Europe's economic success or of the decline of Roman Catholicism's sway in Europe. Rather, both, along with Europe's secularization and creation of sovereign states, were predictable products of the Concordat of Worms (1122).
Professor Bueno de Mesquita is an expert in international relations, foreign policy, and nation building. In a 2009 TED Talk, Professor Bueno de Mesquita explains how he uses mathematical analysis to predict (very often correctly) such messy human events as war and political power shifts.
The Hayek Lecture Series is supported by a grant from the Thomas Smith Foundation. To learn how you can support the Center and the Hayek Lecture Series, please contact our director, Bruce Caldwell, at 919-660-6896 or bruce.caldwell@duke.edu
